For years now, calories have been all the rage -- people are counting them and
cutting them, and you'd be hard-pressed to find something at the supermarket that
does not list its calories per serving somewhere on the package. But have you ever
wondered what exactly a calorie is?
Specifically, a calorie is the amount of energy, or heat, it takes to raise the
temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit). One
calorie is equal to 4.184 joules, a common unit of energy used in the physical
sciences.
A calorie (pronounced cal-er-ee) is a measure of how much energy that protein,
carbohydrates, and fat can supply your body. The number of calories in a food is a
measure of how much potential energy that food will provide for your body.
Calories reside in almost 100% of the foods that we eat. Even evil-tasting rice
cakes contain calories - but you sure wouldn't think they would. Anything that
tastes like cardboard shouldn't contain calories, but yes they do indeedy.
Calories is simply another fancy word for 'energy'. The body needs the calories in
the foods we eat to use as energy. Without calories, we wouldn't feel like going out
and having fun at the mall on those days when we call in sick to work.
Different types of nutrients have different amounts of Calories.
- 1 gram of protein has 4 calories
- 1 gram of fat has 9 calories
- 1 gram of carbohydrate has 4 calories
Some people watch their calories if they are trying to lose weight. Most kids don't need to do this, but all kids can benefit from eating a
healthy, balanced diet that includes the right number of calories - not too many, not too few. But how do you know how many calories you
need?
The number of calories needed is different for every person. Your height, weight, gender, age and activity level affects your caloric needs.
Your complete caloric needs is a sum of your:
- Energy needed to function at rest (60 to 70% of your daily calories). Men usually need more energy to function at rest than women do.
- Energy needed for physical activity. The more physical activities you perform, the more daily calories you will need.
- Energy needed to burn food. Food has to be digested and some people require more energy to digest food than others.
