When setting goals it is very important to remember that your goals must be consistent with your values.
Maintain your commitment to your commitment. Set your goals, promise yourself that you will achieve them. Eliminate wiggle room and excuses. That's personal integrity!
When setting goals consider the following broad guidelines
Positive Statement: express your goals positively:
Be Precise: if you set a precise goal, putting in dates, times and amounts so that achievement can be measured, then you know the exact goal to be achieved, and can know take complete satisfaction from having completely achieved it.
Set Priorities: where you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.
Write goals down to avoid confusion and give them more force. Cross them off as you achieve the goals you recorded.
Set goals that are achievable, there is nothing worse then giving up on a goal merely because you set the wrong goal.
Set nearby and further away goals
Set time lines for your goals and keep the deadlines in front of you so you will know the ones you need to work on.
Set goals that are achievable quickly so you can build on your successes.
Thinking positively in everyday life will also help in your growth as a human being. Don't limit it to goal setting.
When you are thinking about achieving goals, asking the following questions can help you to focus on the source of the achievement:
What skills do I need to achieve this?
What information and knowledge do I need?
What help, assistance, or collaboration do I need?
What resources do I need?
What can block progress?
Am I making any assumptions?
Is there a better way of doing things?
Sometimes we realize we have to revise a goal as circumstances and other goals change. If you need to change a goal do not consider it a failure, consider it a victory as you had the insight to realize something was different.
Goal Setting is definitely an ongoing process that is accomplished over time. When we first sit down and start to define goals it can seem like a difficult and daunting task but over time it begins to get much easier. Patience is required. All goals due in the next year should be reviewed at least once a week and daily if possible. The great thing about frequent review is that this forces us to make big decisions and determine priorities in our life. We should keep watch for goals that aren’t being achieved on time or for goals on which we keep extending the deadline.
